Better than Rosenthal. It had 2 practice exams which helped me realize where my weak areas were and study those areas higher. Passed the CPCE at Liberty University with a pretty good % correct. I added self adhesive tabs to the different sections and that helped with organization. I'm not an auditory learner so this was better for me.Product details

Study Guide for the National Counselor Examination and CPCE 9780964837751 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews
Excellent study material! It was a great refresher and helped me prepare for the NCE! I also appreciate being able to take the pretest before studying and then the post test after studying then comparing my answers!
O.k..so I reviewed various study guides before deciding to buy this one. I read many of the reviews about the Rosenthal book and decided that I wanted something more concise, to the point, without all the filler. That is definitely what I got with this book. Now a big question that people have is, do you need anything else besides this book to pass? I would say yes. I also ordered the NBCC's NCE study guide, from the NBCC (~$34) which Helwig himself recommends in his book. The practice questions in the NBCC book also include some actual former exam questions which I found to be indispensable. Helwig's practice exam was also very good however, I would say much more realistic and closer to the actual exam than those I saw in Rosenthal's book (looked in it on ). I also used a website called quizlet where I made my own flashcards from Helwig's book and reviewed other's cards and generated multiple choice tests. Another supplement for me was to lookup terms and theories online that I felt I needed more clarification on. Because the book is concise, there are some areas that I just needed more examples and info to assist in really understanding and being able to apply my knowledge.
Needless to say I overprepared. I certainly recommend taking several full length practice exams in a test-like environment to see how you do and to get used to the length of time and amount of concentration for the NCE. I scored 138/160 and only needed 97 on my version of the NCE to pass. So would I recommend this book to others for preparing for the NCE?? ABSOLUTELY! I would however use some of the other resources I mentioned if you want to be assured you will pass. Keep in mind however that the pass rate for the NCE is around 80-85% so odds are no matter what study guide you choose, if you study well...and do the practice exams...you will likely pass. Good luck!
I purchased this and the yellow NCE Secrets Study Guide. I passed the NCE Exam with flying colors! A passing score was 93 and I earned a 120. My method of study Read/studied both books, took both test 2 times to at least know those questions. Took every "practice" exam I could find on the internet.
I used this study guide for my test in March, 2014 to help me past my NCE exam. Honestly I have taken this test at least 6X times using Rosenthals tapes and book. I was getting frustrated and wanted to quit but I decided to give it another go and I got this study guide and used all of Rosenthals materials and I CAN HONESTLYSAY THAT I PASSED IN MARCH, 2014. Thank God. If you are struggling with passes this test then I recommend this book.
I learned more from this book than 2 years of online classes. I wish I would have bought it at the beginning of school and used it as a guide for what to really study. This makes a great map of key concepts and principles. I also used the practice tests at counseling exam.com and 2 apps on my phone. I also watch crash course on psychology on You Tube. I passed the NCE with a good score.
I have taken the NCE exam and passed! I used the 7th edition of the Study Guide. Such a wonderful study & review tool!
I received my MA in Counseling from West Texas A&M University. For our CPCE exam, our professors encouraged us to use a different study resource. I had not heard of the Study Guide until I moved to a different state. One of my co-workers heard I was studying for the NCE and suggested Dr. Helwig's materials. I ordered the Study Guide and immediately loved the outline format. I also found the test information invaluable, especially where Dr. Helwig breaks down the test into an estimated number of questions for each of the 8 categories.
How nice that the latest ACA Code of Ethics is included as well as the practice exams. I used both practice exams as a way to gauge how well I knew the materials. My actual score on the NCE was almost identical to my score on the practice exam.
I got in contact with my professors at West Texas A&M and suggested they begin recommending the Study Guide as a resource for students studying for both CPCE and NCE exams.
Such a lovely resource! I wish I had known about it much sooner!!
I bought this following my graduation from a MS program in Rehabilitation Counseling and Mental Health Counseling, to use to take my NCE exam to apply for my LPC/LPCC (I have licensure applications in different states due to my husband being in the military and living in different locations). I have my CRC and that is much more focused on disability populations. I did not feel as prepared to the vast amount of material, and this study guide is broken down into the different sections an gives a general overview of information based on each section included on the NCE.
I used the information in each section to make flash cards, because I prefer using flash cards for my particular learning style and ease. I gave myself 2 months of studying a little each day, and I was able to pass my exam. I feel like this was able to better prepare me for the exam and it is knowledgeable with psychology principles and the different counseling theories and theorist. The information was well distributed and organized, making it easy to understand and study.
I felt like some information was not as in depth, and that caused me to look up more information on certain areas to gain clarity and a deeper understanding. Overall, I felt like this was a beneficial resource and practical study guide, and it helped me pass the NCE.
Better than Rosenthal. It had 2 practice exams which helped me realize where my weak areas were and study those areas higher. Passed the CPCE at Liberty University with a pretty good % correct. I added self adhesive tabs to the different sections and that helped with organization. I'm not an auditory learner so this was better for me.
